Character Series: Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann
Age: 16-ish
Background: Kamina is a young man who lived in Jiiha village, nestled deep within the earth. He was the de-facto leader of a group he called the "Gurren Brigade," and several of the younger village boys served with him. Of these boys, Kamina was closest to the young Simon, who, while timid, Kamina believes in wholeheartedly.

Kamina was always somewhat maligned and ostracized by the village people for his eccentricities. In spite of this, Kamina is nonetheless supremely confident. He believes wholeheartedly in the world above-ground, haven been taken there by his father long ago.

Kamina often clashed with the chief and steward of Jiiha village. While the chief was conservative in how the village should be run, Kamina yearned for the surface, as if feeling the pull of his destiny. Not one to sit idly by in the confines of a small cave, Kamina enlisted the aid of his friend Simon, eventually escaping after Simon discovered Lagann and the village was attacked by a Gunmen. Kamina and Simon traveled to the surface world, joined by a young girl from Ritona by the name of Yoko. Seeing that the humans were embroiled in war with the beastmen, Kamina and Simon immediately joined with them to help fight off the beastmen and put an end to their threat once and for all. During this time, Kamina stole a Gunmen from a beastman and was able to activate it through sheer force of will and eventually combining it with Simon's Gunmen Lagann to create the mighty Gurren-Lagann, a machine piloted by both Simon and Kamina that developed a fearsome reputation and was nigh unstoppable.

While living in Jiiha village, Kamina spent his fair share of nights hungry inside the village jail. His conflict with the chief and his vast number of (generally improbably) schemes to get to the surface invoked the ire of most of the village adults. His obsession with the surface concerned the elders, not only because he was starting to affect their own children with his vision but because the often vast amounts of structural damage Kamina could and often would cause in his attempts to escape was endangering the lives of those living within the village.

That's not to say that Kamina was out to hurt anybody, of course. The desire to visit the surface was simply overwhelming, and Kamina, brash and daring as he was, wasn't often one to consider the possibility of danger. That, coupled with his rebellious streak that was often directed against the chief, made him generally unwilling to listen to what he was told, often dismissing the lectures as being blown out of proportion in an attempt to scare him into obedience, which in turn made him even more defiant.

Personality: With a confidence bordering on arrogance, Kamina doesn't know the meaning of petty words like "defeat" or "surrender." A passionate young man with a flair for the dramatic, Kamina has the unique ability to inspire others to greatness through his sheer bravado and force of personality. He can be a bit old-fashioned, which leads to a bit of sexism on his part (women shouldn't be fighting!), and his sense of honor in combat that can be considered hazardous to his continued existence on this mortal coil (see: shouting insults and challenges at a VERY large robot thing when he's equipped with only a no-dachi).

Kamina is known for his stylish glasses and cape, sheer audacity and willingness to kick reason to the curb and pierce the heavens, and his trademark pose with one finger held high into the air while he encourages everyone around him to believe him the him that believes in them and proudly shouts "who the hell do you think I am!?"

Despite his general overconfidence, Kamina is not completely immune to fear. He believes wholeheartedly in his friends, and is capable of fear. The most notable example of this was when he and his Brigade were trapped in a cave-in. Kamina, terrified, continued to push Simon on with his sheer bravado because Kamina believed that Simon had the power to get them to safety, much as Simon (and to a lesser degree the Gurren Brigade in general) in turn clings to the idea that Kamina, somehow, will find a way out and will lead them to victory. The sheer force of his personality makes it hard not to want to follow him to the ends of the earth, and those who do almost believe him to be invincible. This also presents an interesting symbiotic relationship between Kamina and Simon. For whatever reason, Kamina believes that Simon will get them out of a jam. Simon, in turn, believes utterly in Kamina's ability. As Kamina is wont to say, "believe in the me that believes in you." Kamina trusts those around him, and is willing to believe in them completely.

The most defining aspect of Kamina is his unwavering loyalty to those around him. He can and will correct injustice when needed and protect those who need protection. He will happily give his all to defend someone, and will fight to the bitter end, giving no quarter and standing strong at the slightest provocation. In most cases, the idea that he might lose simply does not seem to occur to Kamina, or if it does he ignores it with astonishing proficiency. Kamina does not retreat, nor does he surrender. As he will not take injustice lying down, neither will he stand for defeat. To Kamina, all his friends and comrades are equally important, and he will stand by them to the end.

Item Lost: Gurren. Kamina managed to steal a large robot (Gunmen) from a beastman that attacked the village of Ritona. It differs in design as it initially received extensive damage to the arms and had to be repaired by the resident mechanic, Leeron. Gurren represents one of the pinnacles of his manly, brotherly and completely heterosexual and fraternal love for Simon, and has the ability to combine (gattai!) with Simon's own mech, Lagann, to create the invincible fighting machine of Gurren-Lagann.
